“Out of Syllabus”, a language enhancement platform which is an initiative of Government Higher Secondary School, Kokkallur aimed at exposing learners of English to practical interaction in the language has entered its third year, as reported by The Hindu.

The initiative was started after teachers felt that the traditional syllabus based teaching was not sufficient for learners to use a language effectively and comfortably. Before the pandemic, the English Club of the school would invite foreign guests to speak to students and interact with them. After the lockdown, the sessions started to be conducted virtually.

Teachers felt that activities such as poster making, news reading and recitation did not evoke as much interest in children in learning the language as interactions with people who did not know Malayalam. It helped acquire confidence and better communication skills.
